In a borough known for its vibrant communities and thriving local economy, it can be easy to overlook the quieter challenges many people face behind closed doors. Across Richmond upon Thames, social isolation, financial hardship, and barriers to employment continue to affect adults from all walks of life.
Shepherd’s Star, a locally founded charity, is working at the heart of the borough to change that - creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to rebuild their lives.
A Grassroots Response to a Growing Need
Shepherd’s Star was formally founded in November 2021, but its roots lie in the collective effort of six Richmond residents who came together during the COVID-19 pandemic to support their community at a time of crisis.
As restrictions eased, the founders recognised a deeper, ongoing need: many individuals were still facing isolation, loss of confidence, and limited opportunities. What began as a volunteer-led response quickly evolved into a structured charity with a a clear mission: to reduce isolation and empower adults facing life's challenges to build their confidence, develop skills and access new opportunities.
Today, Shepherd’s Star supports adults across Richmond who may be facing loneliness, unemployment, disability, mental health challenges, or housing insecurity - offering practical, compassionate, and community-led pathways forward.
Creating Real Impact Across Richmond
Shepherd’s Star delivers five core projects locally, each designed to meet people where they are and guide them forward step by step:
- Good Friday - a weekly community hub offering shared meals, social connection, wellbeing activities, and access to essential support services at the All-in-One hub.
- Explore - a six-week skills and personal development programme helping people rebuild confidence and prepare for new opportunities.
- Shine - an accredited barista training scheme creating real routes into employment.
- Table of Hope - seasonal events bringing people together over shared meals to tackle loneliness.
- Holiday Christmas Box - a volunteer-led initiative supporting families during the festive season, in partnership with Achieving for Children.
At the centre of these projects is a simple but powerful idea: connection comes first. With the right environment and support, individuals can begin to rebuild confidence, rediscover purpose, and take meaningful steps toward employment, volunteering, and independent living.
From Isolation to Employment: A Local Success Story
The impact of Shepherd’s Star is best illustrated through the journeys it helps to shape.
Take Edward, for example. Referred by his Job Centre Advisor while struggling with isolation, anxiety, and depression, Edward began his journey with the Explore programme, reconnecting socially and starting to build confidence.
Through introductions made via the charity, he began volunteering at Kew Gardens, before progressing to the Shine barista training programme. There, supported by a local business partner, he developed practical skills and real-world experience.
Today, Edward has secured his first job in a café and continues to volunteer, supporting others who are just beginning their journey.
His story highlights the charity’s holistic approach which is centred around supporting individuals through multiple stages of growth, at their own pace, and ultimately helping them move from isolation to independence.
