Sara's Story

Sara and Herbert, known as H, met as teenagers and later married, raising two young sons together. By the time H set sail for the Falklands as a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, they were a close-knit family.

On 28th May 1982, H Jones was killed at 42 while leading a courageous assault on an Argentine trench at Goose Green. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest honour for gallantry.

A year after H’s death, Sara joined The Poppy Factory as a Trustee and later became its President, dedicating over 35 years to the community. During her tenure, she helped the charity grow, transforming the veteran employment support that began in the factory into a national service.

By the time Sara stepped down in November 2018, The Poppy Factory had supported over 1,000 veterans with health conditions in finding employment across England and Wales.
