Dennis' Story

Dennis Williams was part of the first generation born at The Poppy Factory. His father, Fred "Bill" Williams, was the factory's inaugural foreman in Richmond and played a crucial role in setting up its operations.
Dennis, who grew up at The Poppy Factory, remembers being kept inside and not allowed to mix with others, similar to a military setup. Following his father’s death, Dennis's mother, Mabel, remarried within the community and took an active role in organising social events at the Remembrance Club, a veterans' social club established in 1930. Dennis fondly recalls his mother’s Stilton Cheese and Onion sandwiches, which were a favourite treat among the members.
